We’ve spent a lot of time camping out of our Four Wheel Camper Project M, mounted on our Ram 3500 dually, and for the way we travel it has become a very practical middle ground between sleeping in a bare truck bed and hauling a traditional RV.
The Project M isn’t a fully self-contained slide-in camper. That’s actually part of the appeal. It gives us a protected sleeping area, standing room when the top is raised, and a permanent platform for organizing our camping setup without turning the truck into something that feels like a motorhome.
We use ours for weekend camping trips, dispersed camping, state parks, rough forest roads, and the kind of trips where we may arrive late, leave early, or change plans completely. That flexibility is probably the biggest reason the Project M works so well for Land or Lake.
What the Project M is built to do
The Project M is a pop-up truck-bed camper with an elevated sleeping platform and fabric sidewalls when raised. The lower profile matters. It can make a truck easier to live with day to day and less top-heavy on rough forest roads than taller hard-sided options.
It is also intentionally simple. You get a protected place to sleep off the ground without towing anything behind you. For people who want to leave camp early for a trail, boat ramp, or fishing spot, that is a real advantage.

The catch is that simple does not mean fully self-contained. Depending on the setup, you may be bringing your own camp kitchen, water storage, power station, and toilet solution. That is not a knock. It is just the difference between a lightweight truck-camping setup and a tiny apartment bolted to your bed rails.
The pop-top also asks a little more of you at camp. You will raise and lower it, manage bedding, and think through where gear lives. On a quick overnight, that may feel easy. On a rainy three-day trip with muddy shoes and wet jackets, organization starts doing a lot of heavy lifting.
After camping with ours, we think the Project M makes the most sense for someone who wants to keep the simplicity and mobility of a truck while gaining a comfortable place to sleep, stand up, organize gear, and get out of the weather. We can pull into camp late, raise the top, and be settled without dealing with a trailer or a complicated setup.
It isn’t the right answer for everyone. If you want a built-in bathroom, large kitchen, lots of indoor living space, or a completely self-contained RV, the Project M may feel too minimal. For us, that simplicity is part of why it works. We spend most of our time outside anyway.
